I'm a man of culture myself, but no matter how many sonnets or tragedies one hears, reads, or sees, nothing beats the airport as a theater for human awfulness, where the combination of mild inconvenience and proximity to vacation money transforms otherwise functional adults into petulant toddlers with credit cards. The Aruba airport, with its byzantine double-customs procedure, serves as a particularly elegant testing ground for character, a place where people reveal exactly who they are when faced with the radical concept of waiting in line like everyone else. It's democracy's cruelest joke: putting the wealthy and entitled in the same fluorescent-lit purgatory as the rest of us, then watching them discover that money can't actually buy their way out of every minor annoyance.

    For some reason, you have to also go through security twice. That means bags scanned, shoes off, etc. The whole process usually takes 3-4 hours.

    When my wife and I got in line, we were near this family of awful, entitled people. There were about 8 of them (two parents and what looked like three married adult daughters),

    and they were loudly complaining about everything as if they were the only ones who were stuck in this line. When they weren't loudly complaining, they were loudly trying to make it apparent that they have more money than everyone around them.

    After waiting in line for a while, they noticed that there was a second line for dis ed individuals. Anyone in a wheelchair or having trouble standing could use this line.

    The most annoying of the daughters started encouraging her parents to use this line. They looked to be in their late 60's, but their only dis lity appeared to be that they were 40% silicone and botox.

    Still, you can't see back pain etc, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Then the same daughter told her whole family to get in that line, and they started to walk past everyone.

Suddenly, every minor ache becomes an inability, every family member requires assistance, and moral boundaries become suggestions rather than guidelines. The real abnormality, of course, is the complete inability to function when the world doesn't revolve around you.

  • And there our Aruba family stood, eight people deep in borrowed victimhood, smugly parading past the unwashed masses while two mortified husbands contemplated the life choices that led them to this fluorescent-lit walk of shame. Even their post-security café tantrum felt inevitable, some people simply cannot exist without a captive audience for their disappointment.
